Nina Simone wanted to be a classical pianist (fascinated by the music of Johann Sebastian Bach): she was turned down because she was black. 50 albums later, she became one of the four greatest vocal jazz singers alongside Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, accompanying herself on the piano with virtuoso ease.

On her first big hit, My Baby Just Cares for Me, which won over a million dollars, she earned only 3,000. In her revolt song Mississippi Goddam, which openly criticizes racial segregation and finds itself banned in several southern states of the United States, she sings “All I want is equality, for my sister my brother my people and me!”. Her song Four Women, which features 4 portraits of black women, is banned on many radio stations. She sings on major occasions during the African-American civil rights movement and advocates for the liberation of black people, including through violence.

Nina Simone marries a white policeman who becomes her manager… and finds herself prosecuted for unpaid taxes and then goes into exile, first in Barbados, then in Liberia, Switzerland, the Netherlands and finally in France.

Her musical heritage is immense as she inspires cover versions by artists of all genres such as the Beatles, Janis Joplin, The Animals, David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Jeff Buckley, Muse, Kanye West…

Among her most famous songs are Love Me Or Leave Me, Ain’t Got No…  I Got Life, Feeling good, I put a spell on you, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood

This Nina Simone poster is a modest tribute to the rebellious diva.
