Biography of Magnus Carlsen
Born on November 30, 1990 in Tønsberg, Norway, Magnus Carlsen is the current World Classical Chess Champion and the world’s No. 1 player in the Elo rating, of which he holds the record with 2882 points.
He conquered the World Champion title in 2013 by beating the Indian Viswanathan Anand, then retained it in 2016 by beating the Russian player Sergei Kariakine, in 2018 by beating the Italian-American player Fabiano Caruana and in 2021 by beating the Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi.
He has also been world champion in rapid games and blitz.
The Mozart of chess
Magnus Carlsen learned to play chess at the age of 5. With an impressive memory that allows him to memorize thousands of games, he progresses rapidly.
At the age of 9, he became the Norwegian Under-11 Chess Champion.
He finished second at the world championship for under-12s.
In 2004, at the age of 13, he won the famous tournament in Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands. That same year, he became the youngest International Grandmaster in history, drew against Kasparov and beat former world champion Anatoly Karpov.
These successes earned him the nickname “Mozart of chess”.
He continues to rise to the top of the world rankings but also loses in important tournaments, especially against Alexei Shirov, Levon Aronian and Vladimir Kramnik.
The World Champion
In 2009, the Norwegian prodigy trained with former world champion Garry Kasparov. He became the world’s number one Elo player and won the World Blitz Championship.
Winner of the Candidates tournament in London in 2013, he qualifies as a challenger for the World Chess Championship against Vishy Anand who he defeats twice. He managed to retain his title against all challengers.
In spite of surprising counter-performances in some competitions, he won all the major chess tournaments: Wijk aan Zee, Linares, Sinquefield Cup, London Chess Classics, Bilbao Masters, Qatar Masters, Leuven, Norway Chess…
Style
Unlike other great players like Bobby Fischer or Garry Kasparov, Magnus Carlsen is known for not necessarily looking for an advantage in the openings: he prefers to gain positional advantages little by little and to turn finals that seemed to be null.
