Louis Pasteur poster, to download and print

The poster represents a black and white drawing portrait of the great scientist Louis Pasteur.

Initially a chemist and physicist, he founded the field of microbiology and discovered the rabies vaccine. Serving the nascent food industries, he studied fermentation processes and invented pasteurization, which makes it possible to preserve food longer.

Biography of Louis Pasteur

Born in Dole on December 27, 1822, Louis Pasteur is by far one of the most illustrious scientists in history. A chemist and theorist by training, he built an impressive career thanks to a number of discoveries and inventions (including pasteurization) that made him the pioneer of microbiology, in constant rivalry with the German researcher Robert Koch. He gave his name to the Pasteur Institute.

After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in literature and another in mathematics, respectively in 1840 and 1842 at the Collège Royal de Franche-Comté, Louis Pasteur was admitted to the École Normale Supérieure in 1843. There he studied chemistry, physics and crystallography.

After becoming an associate professor of chemistry, the scientist defended his thesis at the Faculty of Science in Paris and obtained the title of Doctor of Science. He worked as a professor in Dijon and Strasbourg between 1848 and 1853. During the latter year, he was awarded the title of Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur.

In 1854, Pasteur was appointed Professor of Chemistry and Dean of the new Faculty of Sciences in Lille. Until 1857, the chemist carried out numerous works that led him to present his Memoir on lactic fermentation.

Louis Pasteur’s discoveries are of undeniable importance for science. Indeed, his works concern molecular dissymmetry, fermentation studies, the disproof of spontaneous generation, wine diseases and pasteurization, antisepsis and asepsis, microbes and vaccines, etc.

However, no invention made Louis Pasteur more famous than the development of the rabies vaccine in 1885. Thanks to this vaccine, he saved Joseph Meister’s life from a fatal disease. It was this action that earned him the nickname of benefactor of humanity.

He collaborated with eminent scientists such as Emile Roux, Emile Duclaux, André Pichot, etc. He also published famous works such as: Studies on wine, its diseases, causes that provoke them, new processes for preserving and aging it; Studies on the disease of silkworms.

Other works of Pasteur like “Studies on beer, its diseases, causes which provoke them” were also famous.

On May 29, 1948, he married Marie Laurent and they had five children: Jeanne, Jean Baptiste, Cécile, Marie-Louise and Camille.

Pasteur died on September 28, 1895 in Marnes-la-Coquette.
