Biography of Robert Koch

Heinrich Hermann Robert Koch, born December 11, 1843 in Clausthal, Germany, was a famous German physician and microbiologist. Most famous for his discovery of the organisms that cause tuberculosis, septicemia, anthrax and cholera, he scientifically modernized bacteriology and is among the main creators of medical bacteriology.

Koch Robert was the third child of a family working mainly in mining. His father Hermann Koch, a mining quartermaster from Clausthal, and his mother Mathilde Juliette Henriette Biewend, daughter of an iron mine inspector, sent him to elementary school at the age of 5.

Thanks to his great intellectual abilities, which he showed at an early age, he quickly finished primary and secondary school and went to Göttingen where he studied anatomy, clinical science, physics and physiology. He studied at the University of Göttingen and with several scholars from 1862.

Robert Koch obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1866 and worked for a short time as an assistant physician at the hospital in Hamburg. He then began his work and research on anthrax when he moved to Wollstein as a physician.

After studying the proliferation of this microbe, his work was published by Ferdinand Julius Cohn in 1876. Robert Koch then began the study of septicemia.

Koch’s previous work earned him a great reputation. Indeed, after having held several positions, he became commissioner of the imperial health office in Berlin between 1884 and 1885. In the latter year, he was awarded the chair of hygiene at the University of Berlin.

In 1892, a few months after his divorce, Robert Koch remarried Hedwig Freiberg, a 17-year-old student.

He received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1905 thanks to his brilliant career and became a member of the Royal Society in March 1897.

On May 27, 1910, Robert Koch died of a heart attack during a cure in Baden-Baden.
