Poster Max Planck, to download and print

The poster is a black and white drawing portrait of the great scientist Max Planck.

Founder of quantum mechanics with Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr, he notably invented the Planck constant, noted h, used to measure the size of quanta. In cosmology, the Planck era designates that moment after the Big Bang and before cosmic inflation, when the 4 fundamental interactions (electromagnetism, weak interaction, strong interaction, and gravity) were unified.

Biography of Max Planck

Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck was born on April 23, 1858 in the duchy of Schleswig, more precisely in Kiel. Considered the founder of quantum mechanics, this German physicist made history with his work on quantum theory.

From a middle-class family, Max Planck attended high school in Munich. He studied mathematics and physics at university and received his bachelor’s degree at the age of 17. During his university studies in Berlin, he was a student of Gustav Kirchhoff and Hermann Von Helmholtz.

Max Planck defended his doctoral thesis on the second principle of thermodynamics and the concept of entropy in 1878. He succeeded in obtaining his habilitation in 1881. Four years later, the physicist obtained a position as assistant professor of theoretical physics at the University of Kiel.

After Kirchhoff’s death, he was transferred to the Humboldt University in Berlin on Helmholtz’s recommendation. Max Planck’s research focused on thermodynamics, electromagnetism and statistical physics. His close collaboration with his counterpart Albert Einstein helped support the quantum theory.

Planck won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918 and has also received several honors, medals and decorations. Among his prestigious titles are the Goethe Prize, Knight of the Order “for Merit” of Science and Art, Knight of the Bavarian Order of Maximilian for Science and Art, the Helmholtz Medal, the Liebig Medal, the Lorentz Medal and many others.

Together with Albert Einstein, Max Planck also received the first Max Planck Medal in 1929. The physicist is the author of several scientific articles and books and collections of courses, including The Principle of Conservation of Energy, The Précis of Thermochemistry, The Course on the Theory of Thermal Radiation, the Course on Thermodynamics.

Max Planck married Marie Merck on March 31, 1887. They had four children: Karl, the twins Grette and Emma, and Erwin. After Marie’s death in 1909 he married Marga von Hößlin, with whom he had a child named Hermann. Unfortunately, all of Planck’s children died before him. He died on October 4, 1947 in Göttingen, Germany.
