Biography of Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking, British theoretical physicist and cosmologist was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, United Kingdom.

Recognized as a world-renowned scientist, he became famous for his works of popular science.

His father Frank Hawking was a research biologist and his mother, Isobel Hawking, a political activist.

Fleeing the bombings during the Second World War, the Hawking family settled in the county of Hertfordshire, precisely in St Albans in 1950 and the young Stephen continued his schooling there. Passionate about science, he turned to physics at Oxford University where he studied thermodynamics, relativity and quantum physics.

In 1962, Stephen obtained his B.A. degree from Oxford University and went on to study astronomy at the same university. However, he dropped out soon after and left Oxford for Cambridge University at Trinity Hall.
When Stephen arrived at Cambridge, he was only 21 years old, but the symptoms of his sclerosis became apparent. A disease that deprives him of all neuromuscular control.

Stephen Hawking desperately continued his studies even though his disease gave him only two to three years to live. In 1965, he married Jane Wilde, a language student with whom he had three children. Shortly after obtaining his doctorate, Stephen Hawking became a professional researcher at Cambridge.

In the 1970s and 1980s, he became one of the world’s leading researchers thanks to his work on gravitational singularities, which led him to the study of black holes and the Big Bang. The discoveries of this brilliant scientist earned him the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1982.

After losing his ability to speak, Stephen Hawking published several popular science books, including “A Brief History of Time” in 1988, which quickly became a bestseller.

Although his illness prevented him from carrying out his work and publishing several other works, Stephen Hawking died at age 76 on March 14, 2018 in Cambridge, Albert Einstein‘s birthday.
