Dmitri Mendeleev

Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleïev, born on January 27, 1834 in Tobolsk in Eastern Siberia and twelfth child of a large sibling, is a Russian chemist mainly known for his research and work on the periodic classification of chemical elements.

Ivan Pavlovich Mendeleev, his father, a teacher of literature and director of an upper secondary school, died after losing his sight when Dmitri was still a child. His mother, Maria Dmitrievna Mendeleev, moved to St. Petersburg with the young chemist in 1949 after a fire destroyed their glass factory.

Dmitri could not fulfill his desire to enter the university to continue his studies and entered the pedagogical institute of teacher training for secondary school where he studied mathematics, physics and chemistry.

He graduated at the top of his class and was awarded the medal of excellence. After graduation, he contracted tuberculosis and went into exile in the Crimean peninsula in 1855 where he became the head of science at the local high school.

In 1856, he returned to St. Petersburg completely cured and devoted his studies to chemistry, obtaining his degree in 1857. He wrote a manual of organic chemistry in 1861 in sixty days and then obtained his doctorate in chemistry.

In 1867, Dmitri Mendeleev, 31 years old, became a full professor of mineral chemistry at the University of St. Petersburg after working with Heidelberg and other scientists. In 1869, the scientist began the periodic clarification of the chemical elements, also known as Mendeleev’s Table.

His work allowed him to create a remarkable order that represents all the chemical elements classified by increasing atomic numbers. Mendeleev’s table is still used to this day by the scientific world and the existence of some elements predicted by the chemist was confirmed long afterwards.

Dmitri Mendeleev died at the age of 72 in St. Petersburg.
