Biography of Robert Oppenheimer
Robert Oppenheimer is a brilliant American physicist born on April 22, 1904 in New York. World famous for his nickname of ”father of the atomic bomb”. Robert Oppenheimer was born into a wealthy and intellectual family.
At a young age, he was already fluent in English, German, and French and was able to read and understand the works of great mathematicians, chemists, and physicists.
In 1911, his father Julius Oppenheimer, a successful businessman, and his American-born mother Ella Friedman placed Robert in a school run by an agnostic association.
He entered Harvard University in 1922 to study science and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry in 1925.
After graduation, Robert Oppenheimer decided to continue his studies in theoretical physics and mathematics at the University of Göttingen under the direction of Max Born and received his doctorate at the age of 22 in 1926.
He then published articles on quantum theory and became a professor at the California Institute of Technology in 1928. Some time later, he discovered the Born-Oppenheimer approximation during his research in astrophysics and nuclear physics with his friend Ernest Orlando Lawrence and other researchers at the cyclotron.
In November 1940, Robert Oppenheimer married Puening Harrison, a student. The couple had their first child (Peter) in May 1941.
The scientist made history when he was named director of the Manhattan Project in 1943, a project that focused the research of American efforts on atomic bombs. Robert Oppenheimer and his team developed the first three atomic bombs in history, including those launched in August 1945 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
In 1947, Robert became director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, where he finished his career with flying colors.
He died of cancer on February 18, 1967 at the age of 62.
