Biography of Charles Darwin
Known for his scientific contributions in biology, Charles Robert Darwin is a British naturalist and paleontologist born on February 12, 1809 in Shropshire in Shrewsbury. He conducted several works on the evolution of living species, including his book The Origin of Species.
He had 10 children, three of whom died before reaching the age of majority. This tragic loss led him to look into inbreeding, as his wife is his cousin Emma Wedgwood.
In addition, he has made a name for himself through his activities as a geologist, travel writer, philosopher, writer, explorer, botanist, naturalist, biologist, beekeeper, entomologist and ethologist.
Passionate about natural history, Charles Darwin showed no enthusiasm for his medical studies. This passion led him to participate in the research of the famous zoologist Robert Edmond Grand.
However, his father Robert Darwin enrolled him in theology at Christ’s College in Cambridge. After his studies, he began his adventures as a naturalist with a trip to the island of Tenerife before his 1831 expedition to South America as a naturalist.
His work led him to the theory of evolution with his entry into the Council of the Geographical Society and the presentation of his research before the Geological Society of London in 1837. In 1838, Charles Darwin became secretary of the Geological Society.
Thereafter, he conducted studies on the development of the theory of natural selection and was the author of several books.
There are for example the journal The Voyage of the Beagle published in 1839, Zoology of the Voyage of the H.M.S Beagle written in 1839, The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species, On the Ability of Plants to Move, and The Formation of Vegetable Earth by Action.
He also wrote several geological studies in the 1840s. These studies earned him several honors and awards before his death on April 19, 1882.
