Poster Alan Turing, to download and print

The poster shows a black and white drawing portrait of the great scientist Alan Turing.

A British mathematician and cryptologist, he laid the foundations of computer science, programming and artificial intelligence with his concepts of the Turing Machine and Turing Testing. Working to decipher the German Enigma system during the war, he made a major contribution to cryptanalysis.

Biography of Alan Turing

Cryptologist and British mathematician, Alan Turing is a computer genius born on June 23, 1912 in London.

Son of a colonial administrator in Madras, Alan Turing at barely 1 year old and his older brother John are placed in a family of pensioners to be raised near Hasting in southern Britain.

At the age of 10, young Alan developed a keen interest in science and mathematics. From 1931 to 1934, Turing studied mathematics at King’s College, University of Cambridge, where he received his B.A. in 1934 and was awarded a Fellowship of King’s College in 1935.

In 1936, Turing conceptualized the Turing machine, the forerunner of the computer and a precursor model of computing.

During World War II in 1939, the young mathematician and cryptologist left Cambridge and joined the British secret service to decrypt Enigma, a set of machines used by the German military command to protect its communications. His successful research and work on the cryptography of the Nazi Enigma machine earned him the title of World War II hero.

After the war, Turing devoted his work to artificial intelligence and computer programming. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1951, but his career broke down because of his sexual orientation.

Turing openly assumed to be homosexual, as he did not hide his affairs. He was charged with an ex-lover involved in a burglary of the Manchester house in 1952. Alan Turing, following this situation, was dismissed from the largest scientific projects.

On June 8, 1954, Alan Turing was found dead, lying in his room after having eaten an apple poisoned with cyanide.
